A devastating car bomb attack orchestrated by the Taliban left 63 dead and another 151 wounded in the Afghan capital Saturday,  local authorities told BBC.

The explosion occurred a little after noon, when an extremist driving an ambulance filled with explosives detonated his deadly cargo outside the old Ministry of the Interior building in Kabul.

Police identified the man at the security checkpoint, but they were unable to stop him from carrying out his mission, Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi revealed to CNN, which initially reported 40 dead and 140 wounded. The injured have been taken to hospitals and medical centers across the capital, where doctors are treating people for a variety of injuries.

The death toll has been steadily rising throughout the morning. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mojahid claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack, the third deadly terrorist attack in Afghanistan in a week.

Last weekend, Taliban gunmen raided the International Hotel in Kabul. Twenty-two people, including four Americans, were killed during a 12-hour shootout between the terrorists and the local authorities.

The Islamic State detonated a car bomb outside Save the Children, a children’s charity in Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province, ending the lives of four and injuring a few dozen others.
