Billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer blasted Republicans and Democrats for overwhelmingly defeating a bill calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
Congress’s failure to pass a bill ousting the president makes the country less safe, Steyer wrote in a press statement Friday after the House torpedoed, 355-66, a vote on articles of impeachment. His campaign to oust Trump from office has garnered little support from Democratic leadership.
“This vote is not a reflection of whether or not Trump has passed the threshold for impeachment, which he did months ago,” he said Friday in a press statement after the vote. “It is a failure by members of Congress to do what’s right to keep the American people safe.”
Steyer, a billionaire former hedge fund manager from California, used various social media platforms to launch the Need to Impeach movement in October of 2017. More than four million people have signed the petition, but Democrats in the House are not enamored with the move.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called an impeachment campaign impractical last year and suggested it distracts from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation and could jeopardize Democratic efforts to take back Congress in 2018.
Steyer, who supported former Secretary for State Hillary Clinton’s presidential run, backs the Mueller investigation but thinks there is an “open and shut case that [Trump] has met the criteria for impeachment.” He has yet to produce evidence supporting his position.
There was speculation that Steyer was using his $20 million impeachment drive to run for office. But he ended such talk earlier this month during a press conference in Washington, D.C. He will spend 2018 dumping millions of dollars on campaigns to unseat Republicans instead of campaigning for California’s open gubernatorial seat.
