Dr. Jordan B. Peterson insisted Thursday that an interviewer in a high-tension segment he did on Channel 4 “misrepresented everything [he] said.”
The University of Toronto psychology professor faced off against Channel 4 presenter Cathy Newman in a confrontational interview and gave The Daily Caller News Foundation exclusive comment regarding his experience.
“She misrepresented everything I said, when she wasn’t fabricating it entirely,” Peterson told TheDCNF. “I say this without rancor; just as an observation.”
Newman interrogated Peterson on the pay gap, free speech versus offensiveness, and what holds women back in the workplace. The professor suggested the interviewer did not characterize his arguments properly.
“I don’t think she uttered a single word in the entire interview that she believed to be true,” the professor told TheDCNF. “I think it was all provocation and sensation and dominance challenge. Perhaps this was an approach that attracted viewers and built Ms. Newman’s career, but it’s not a reasonable way to conduct a discussion about serious matters.”
At one point in the interview, Newman asked Peterson why his right to free speech should take precedent over a transgender individual’s right not to be offended. The professor said that “because in order to be able to think, you have to risk being offensive,” noting that Newman risked offending him with her interview technique and telling her “more power to you” for doing so.
Newman was left momentarily speechless.
Peterson said he did not believe Newman’s style of interview benefited viewers to the same degree as would a “genuine conversation.”
“Fittingly enough, I cover exactly this topic in Chapter 9 of my new book, ’12 Rules for Life,'” said Peterson to TheDCNF. “The chapter is Rule 9: Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t. In it I outline a taxonomy of conversations, including the dominance hierarchy challenge exchange, which is far inferior to a philosophical conversation, say, where both participants are striving to further and deepen their understanding of the truth.”
TheDCNF reached out to Newman for her perspective on the interview, but received no comment in time for press.
