Senate Republicans who were in the room with President Donald Trump when he allegedly questioned why the U.S. allows people to immigrate from “shithole” countries say they can’t verify the president’s statement.
“In regards to Senator Durbin’s accusation, we do not recall the President saying these comments specifically but what he did call out was the imbalance in our current immigration system, which does not protect American workers and our national interest,” GOP Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia said in a statement.
The Washington Post reported Thursday evening that the president said, “why are we accepting all these people from shithole countries?” The president reportedly said this in a meeting with lawmakers in reference to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries.
Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina said Friday that Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told him the WaPo’s comments were “basically accurate.”
