Vox Media Employees Get Their Union

Vox Media management voluntarily recognized its employee union on Wednesday, the latest media company to have an organized workforce.
The effort took almost two months, with representatives from the Writers Guild of America meeting with both Vox employees and management.
“We have worked hard to form a unit that represents the people who build this company every day and want to look out for each other,” the Vox Media Union Organizing Committee announced in a statement. “That work has finally paid off.”
Things did not always seem so certain for Vox’s labor organizers. Management said it was open to allowing a union, however, they also expressed early skepticism that a union would ultimately be good for the company.
Vox employees issued a “Slack strike” earlier this month, and refused to use the popular workplace communication tool as a bargaining tool during negotiations.
Vox employees join Vice, HuffPost, and Thrillist in having a unionized newsrooms. Other companies haven’t been so lucky, Gothamist and DNAInfo shut down in the midst of a union push by editorial employees. Writers at The Los Angeles Push have also faced resistance from management in their unionization drive.
