Julian Assange Has Been Granted An Ecuadorian Passport

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was granted a passport for Ecuador after taking asylum in the country’s London embassy since 2012.
The news broke that Assange had received his passport from the government Wednesday, hours after he uploaded a picture of himself wearing an Ecuadorian soccer jersey to his Twitter. The picture led to speculation that he had been granted citizenship, the Ecuadorian news outlet El Universo first reported, which was later confirmed.

Assange has been in asylum since 2012 in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, following sexual assault charges in Sweden that were dropped in May because officials couldn’t physically serve him a court appearance.The U.S., meanwhile, is reportedly investigating Assange and WikiLeaks for publishing hundreds of thousands of classified documents.
