77-year-old Michael Joseph Lynch of Portland, Ore., tried to murder his neighbor’s dogs four separate times but avoided a prison sentence and received probation Wednesday.
Lynch was convicted of trying to kill his neighbor’s Spaniels, Bandit and Snowflake, by lacing pieces of sausages with the powerful poison ricin and throwing them over the fence, according to The Oregonian. Authorities said Lynch was frustrated with their loud barking.
Lynch was also sentenced for harming his neighbor, Richard Schmidtke, whose health deteriorated from touching the tainted meant. He required immediate medical assistance and was placed on a ventilator due to respiratory issues, The Oregonian reports.
Schmidtke said Lynch has “absolutely no respect for what is socially acceptable,” and has “no moral compass,” He also questioned what sort of person would harm a defenseless animal without provocation. “What kind of person stoops so low as to poison animals?’ he asked.
Lynch had never been in trouble with the law until Wednesday’s conviction and worked as a railroad engineer for almost 40 years, according The Daily Mail. He pleaded no contest and declined to make a statement in court.
