US Muslim Population Expected To Double In 30 Years

The U.S. Muslim population will double in approximately 30 years, growing from 3.45 million to 8.1 million, according to projections from The Pew Research Center.

The projected growth numbers for the U.S. Muslim population come from a study that Pew conducted to find out how many Muslims actually live in the U.S. The Muslim population in the country has skyrocketed since Pew first conducted a study of American Muslims in 2007, growing at a rate of 100,000 per year since 2011, due to immigration and high fertility rates.

U.S. converts to Islam have had little impact on the growth of the Islamic community, according to Pew, since only one in five American Muslims have converted from another faith, while the same percentage applies to those who leave Islam. Despite the dearth of conversions, Pew projects that U.S. Muslims will replace U.S. Jews as the second largest religious population in the country behind Christians by the year 2040. Overall, the approximately 3.45 Muslims currently living in the U.S. make up 1.1 percent of the U.S. population.

The projected growth of the Muslim population is not particular to the U.S., however, as the Muslim population in the European Union is projected to grow from 4.9 to 7.4 percent of the EU’s overall population by the year 2050, indicating a general trend of rapid increase in Muslim population throughout the West.
