President Donald Trump promised a group of law enforcement officials Friday that he will be their “true friend and loyal champion in the White House.”
“I want you to know that with me, as your president, America’s police will have a true friend and loyal champion in the White House, more loyal than anyone else can be,” Trump told a group of state and local police officers gathered at the FBI National Academy.
“I also want to take a moment to speak to all of the law enforcement families here today,” the president said. “You make tremendous sacrifices. American families can sleep soundly at night because of the burden that you carry for all of us. So on behalf of all Americans, to every law enforcement family here today, all across the nation, thank you, thank you, thank you very much.”
Trump also said that the agency is full of “great, great people” who are “really heroes to all of us.”
His comments are somewhat surprising, given his history of bashing the FBI under former Director James Comey.
Trump took a shot at Comey in early December for running the agency with supposed political motives, and promised to bring it “back to greatness.”
“After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters – worst in History! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness,” Trump tweeted.
