Left-Wing Writers Attack Schumer After Jerusalem Embassy Move

After reports surfaced that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer advised President Donald Trump to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, many left-wing figures began attacking the New York Democrat for his pro-Israel stance.
A prominent member of Vox Media’s braintrust, Matt Yglesias, called Schumer’s position on Israel “nutty.”
The thing some people don’t get about Schumer’s (nutty, imo) Israel politics is it’s 100 percent conviction on his part — not politics or positioning.

Vox once published an article claiming that a bridge existed connecting Gaza to the West Bank. The claim was later retracted.
Anti-Israel activist Max Blumenthal knocked both Schumer and Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland as representing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), rather than their home states.

Claiming that Jewish-Americans are more loyal to Israel than the United States is a common trope. AIPAC frequently lobbies to Congress on behalf of Israel.
Blumenthal’s colleague Ben Norton, from the left-wing news outlet Alternet, labeled Schumer as a “Wall Street lover,” and asserted that the embassy move was “illegal.”

Norton did not provide any legal statute supporting his claim.
Prominent writer Eoin Higgins declared Schumer a supporter of an “apartheid” state, and predicted that the “whole world [will] burn.”

It should be noted that Israel considers Jerusalem its capital, and the city currently houses the country’s parliament and home of the prime minister.
Director of the American Civil Liberties Union human rights program Jamil Dakwar weighed in, blasting Schumer and Cardin as “part of the problem when it comes to US policy on Israel.”

Under then-President Bill Clinton in 1995, Congress passed a law mandating that the U.S. embassy be located in Jerusalem. While each subsequent president has delayed its implementation, former President Barack Obama campaigned on the necessity of Palestinians recognizing Jerusalem as the Jewish state’s capital.
