Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, a leading progressive voice on immigration, won’t seek reelection, Democratic sources with knowledge told Politico.

Gutierrez, one of President Donald Trump’s most ardent critics, is expected to announce his decision to forego running in 2018 during a press conference Tuesday.

The decision seems to have been made recently as Gutierrez’s spokesman, Douglas Rivlin told Politico he had not been informed of the news.

“I don’t know anything. I don’t know anything,” Rivlin said late Monday.

Gutierrez is a leading progressive immigration reform advocate and was arrested while protesting against Trump’s immigration agenda outside the White House in August. The Illinois lawmaker has also spoken out in support of filing articles of impeachment against Trump.

Ahead of Gutierrez’s official announcement two Chicago politicians are already expressing interest in taking his seat, Politico reports.
