Nearly 200 Sufi Muslims were slaughtered during Mosque services Friday in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula by suspected Islamic militants.

Islamic militants have not targeted Sufi Muslims in Egypt in the past but are regarded by fundamentalist groups like the Islamic State to be heretical. The religious group has faced persecution by fundamentalists in Afghanistan and Pakistan for many years.

The well planned attack reportedly began when bombs inside the mosque exploded and worshippers poured out of the building. As they exited the mosque, militants were waiting for them with weapons and shot them down. A suicide bomber may have triggered the initial explosion.

Images from the girsly scene show bodies piled up at the scene and emergency workers rushing to help the wounded. Some emergency workers were targeted by militants who remained at the scene of the crime throwing the situation into utter chaos.
