Mulligan! Japanese PM Falls Off Into Sand Trap On Golf Outing With Trump [Video]

President Donald Trump managed to make it through his trip to Japan without any mishaps or missteps, but the same reportedly cannot be said for his Japanese counterpart.

On a golf outing at the Kasumi Country Club, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tumbled off into a sand trap, according to Japanese media reports and the Washington Post. Fortunately for the Japanese dignitary, Trump didn’t appear to notice the incident.

After hitting a ball out of the trap, Abe attempted to climb out of the bunker, but he failed miserably. Tumbling off backwards, the Japanese prime minister engaged in some unplanned gymnastics. Trump, however, was already walking off and didn’t seem to see the spill.

A sandy Abe then reportedly rushed back to join the American president.

While this video has been circulating, there are questions as to whether the individual who fell was the Japanese leader. In earlier photos, he was seen wearing a blue shirt, although it is possible he could have changed shirts or put on a jacket. But, if it wasn’t Abe, then the questions is: Who was it?

Golf has played a prominent role in interactions between Abe and Trump, who appear to have developed a very friendly relationship. Abe presented Trump with a golden golf club when he visited the president at Mar-a-Lago earlier this year. He reportedly practiced prior to Trump’s trip to Japan, although the score of the game with Trump was kept a secret. It is unclear, though, whether Abe’s golf diplomacy was effective, given the limited opportunities for conversation on the course.

Nonetheless, bilateral ties, excluding a minor misunderstanding over arms sales, appear to be on a positive trajectory.
