The police officers who fired on a New York City terror suspect Tuesday evening “lit him up,” according to a fellow law enforcement official.

“He jumped out of the truck with a pellet gun, yelled, ‘Allahu Akbar,’ and the First Precinct lit him up,” a law enforcement official said, The New York Times reported.

Witnesses claim they heard gunfire, and most of them ducked for cover. The suspect, identified as as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, is being treated at a nearby hospital, and officials are searching for possible accomplices.

At least eight people were killed near the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan when Saipov drove a Home Depot rental truck onto a bike path and jumped out holding fake firearms, shouting “Allahu Akbar.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio held a news conference and confirmed that the incident was a terrorist attack. “Based on information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror,” he said.

Eleven people were injured, and the situation is still under investigation.
