Tropical storm Nate is on a collision course for the norther Gulf Coast of the United States, threatening to make landfall in southeast Louisiana Saturday night.
The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for the coastal regions of Alabama and Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana Friday.
Tropical storm force winds are expected to hit these areas by Saturday afternoon. Nate is expected to become a hurricane by the time it makes landfall in the U.S., The Washington Post reports.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu is urging residents to evacuate or prepare for the storm with sandbags and extra food and water, as well as prepare to be without electricity for at least a week.

As a tropical storm, Nate passed over Nicaragua and Coasta Rica Wednesday and Thursday, killing 22 and setting off a series of smaller disasters such as mud slides and flooding, BBC reports.
Nearly half a million people are without running water in Costa Rica, and thousands are sleeping in shelters.
