A member of the U.S. led anti-Islamic State coalition was killed by an improvised explosive device in Iraq Sunday, U.S. Central Command revealed in a statement.
“The names and circumstances surrounding the incident are being held pending notification of next of kin, and will be released at the discretion of the pertinent national authorities,” the statement clarified. The statement’s reference to “pertinent national authorities” may indicate that the deceased service member is not a member of the U.S. military.
Several other nations have troops on the ground training, advising, and assisting the Iraqi Security Forces in the fight against ISIS. A French paratrooper was killed in late September in the Iraq-Syria area serving in the same capacity.
