People Are Gearing Up To Protest The Lack Of Public Toilets For Women

Protesters in Amsterdam are planning demonstrations Friday due to the lack of public toilets for women.

Officials previously fined Geerte Piening, 23, after she urinated in the street because she could not find a toilet for women. Piening, frustrated for receiving the fine, brought the matter to court. A judge ruled she should have used a toilet for men, sparking the call for women to protest. Amsterdam has 35 public urinals for men and only three public toilets for women, The Guardian reported Thursday.

Piening’s case caused major backlash due to the struggles women have finding a public toilet in the city.

“It has become a massive feminist issue, and that was not really what I was after,” Piening said. “On the other hand, it is about time the issue was raised. It is embarrassing that there is nowhere for women to go.”

There are currently 1,100 people planning to take part in a protest called “Urinoirplassen voor vrouwen,” according to Facebook. Another 7,900 Facebook users expressed interested in attending the event that lasts through Sept. 30.

Due to the large number expected to attend, the women are encouraged to protest at urinals spread throughout Amsterdam, added Dutch News.
