Protesters swarmed a Thomas Jefferson statue at the University of Virginia Tuesday night, climbing and covering it with a black shroud and a pro-Black Lives Matter sign.

UVA students, alumni, and community members comprised the Charlottesville, Va. protest group, which plastered the statue’s base with a sign reading “Black Lives Matter — F*** White Supremacy,” according to The Cavalier Daily.

“What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!” chanted the protesters. “If we don’t get it? Shut it down!”

They carried signs saying “Hoos Against White Supremacy,” “F*** Silence,” “Black Lives Matter,” and “UVA Graduate Students In Solidarity.”

Although police officers were present, the shroud and sign remained on the statue following the protesters’ departure.

The Charlottesville city council voted in August to cover its Robert E. Lee statue in black tarp, representing the city’s mourning of the death of Heather Heyer in the Charlottesville riot. (RELATED: VIDEO: Workers Cover Robert E. Lee Statue In Charlottesville)
