Vatican Hospital Holds Press Conference About Charlie Gard

Bambino Gesu, the Vatican Hospital, held a press conference Tuesday in London to discuss the ongoing Charlie Gard court case.
Hospital Director Mariella Enoc and Doctor Enrico Bertini discussed Gard’s medical care since his parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, decided to end their court battle to bring their infant to the United States for experimental treatment.
“Why did we try to help Charlie? Not for the publicity, as someone stated, but because after talking with his mother over telephone I understood that it was a question of helping them have hope,” Enoc said.
The experimental therapy for Gard “could have been an opportunity” to cure the baby, but it is now too late to start the treatment, a Vatican pediatric hospital chief said. Hospital officials also noted that they could not know how Gard would have responded to the treatments six months ago.
“While Charlie will not continue to live, there will maybe be a different way of approaching these situations,” Bertini said.
Gard’s parents told the court Tuesday that their “last wish” is for the hospital to allow their terminally ill son to die at home.
