Billionaire Michael Bloomberg donated $12 million to support eight congressional candidates with ties to the gun-control group he backs, Politico reported Friday.
Bloomberg previously had announced $80 million in donations on Oct. 20, according to the New York Times, backing Democratic candidates in multiple statewide races and handing Everytown for Gun Safety $24 million. That makes the total donations to the group, which Bloomberg has heavily funded, reach at least $36 million.
“When the wind is at your back, you want to put more boats in the water,” Howard Wolfson, senior adviser to Bloomberg, told Politico. “And it seemed to us that the wind was even more strongly blowing this week.”
The districts former volunteers with Moms Demand Action are running in include three of the four seats in Iowa and two in Michigan, both states carried by President Donald Trump in the 2024 elections, along with single districts in Florida, Pennsylvania and Arizona, Politico reports.
In Iowa’s First Congressional District, Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks is facing Democratic nominee Christina Bohannon; while in the second district, Republican Joe Mitchell is running against Democrat Lindsay James; Republican Rep. Zach Nunn is facing Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott in the third district, according to Ballotpedia.
In Michigan’s Eighth Congressional District, Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet faces a challenge from Republican Thomas J. Smith, while in the Tenth Congressional District, the open seat is up for grabs between Democrat Christina Hines and Republican Michael Bouchard, according to Ballotpedia.
In Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District, Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani is facing off against Democrat JoAnna Mendoza, while in Pennsylvania’s eighth district, Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan Jr. is facing Democrat Paige Cognetti.
Bloomberg gave donations of at least $2.5 million to candidates running in states that normally are pro-Second Amendment, including Democratic Senate nominees James Talarico of Texas, Adam Hamilton of Kansas and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told The New York Times he was hoping for Bloomberg’s spending to boost his party’s chances of taking the House.
“Mayor Bloomberg played an incredibly instrumental role in the decisive midterm election in 2018,” Jeffries said. “The extraordinary support from Mayor Bloomberg will once again help Democrats flip the House.”
Everytown and its predecessor groups, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action, have been the recipient of over $270 million from Bloomberg since 2007, according to The New York Times.
Everytown touted its $1 million ad campaign for Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger shortly after she defeated then-Republican Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in the 2025 gubernatorial race.
