Third-party Wyoming gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Bextel told Tucker Carlson during an interview released Saturday that taxpayers of America’s reddest state in particular are being scammed by the development of affordable housing.

Bextel, who is running under the banner of the Constitution Party, claimed taxpayer dollars were flowing to benefit out-of-state private equity firms, one of which she said was owned by the Japanese. Furthermore, the more-than-120-year-old famous Jackson Hole Rodeo may become a casualty of such transactions after the town of Jackson gave developers a “free 99-year lease” to build affordable housing on those grounds, Bextel warned Carlson.

Neither Bextel nor the town of Jackson immediately responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.

“It’s a $24 million project,” Bextel said when Carlson asked who built and funded the project. “There was [sic] $4 million missing dollars. I had to pay $1,250 for a public records request and I was able to find one million, which was what the developers paid themselves to build the project.”

Bextel said that the loans to get the project off the ground were guaranteed by the public through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program and that such projects don’t pay any property tax.

“And they’re owned by whom?” Carlson asked.

“Well, I identified four buildings in Natrona County — which is Casper — that two of them are owned by the Japanese,” Bextel said. “Literally ORIX, the Japanese private equity firm, owns two of those buildings, and the other two are owned by East Coast equity firms, paying no property tax.”

“How does a private equity firm on the East Coast wind up with public housing in Jackson paid for by taxpayers?” Carlson said.

“That’s the scam,” Bextel responded before stating that she’s suing the town in light of the “over three million missing dollars.”

“It’s next-level corruption,” she said. “I think it’s bigger than the Minnesota scam. Tucker, these buildings are all over America.”

The town of Jackson is located in Teton County, Wyoming. Bextel resigned as the Teton County Republican Party’s state committeewoman in May 2026 to pursue the third-party nomination for governor, Jackson Hole News & Guide reported.

Bextel faces Republican nominee Eric Barlow — who beat Trump-endorsed Megan Degenfelder on Aug. 18 — and Democratic nominee Ken Canser during the Nov. 3 general election.
