Terror Suspects Arrested Outside UK Air Base Released On Bail

Authorities in the United Kingdom on Monday released five men on bail Monday who were arrested under suspicion of a terrorist plot that may be connected to the Iran war.

Following initial reports of a “major incident diverted” Sunday, the U.K.’s Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) unit announced the terrorist suspects — who were allegedly caught with explosives outside Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford airbase — were released on bail after interrogation, the BBC reported.

Iran is increasing efforts to enlist terrorist groups in combatting U.S. attacks. The U.S. Air Force has used the RAF airbase for defensive strikes on Iran since March. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said in July that Britain assisting the U.S. in its war effort in any form made the European country a “definite and ​legitimate target,” Iranian state media reported at the time.

“Any base used for aggression against Iranian territory is a legitimate target for us,” the IRGC said that month, Saudi-owned outlet Al Majalla reported.

Despite this claim, the Iranian Embassy vehemently denies any involvement in the attack and issued a statement on X calling the allegation “unfounded and biased speculations published by certain British individuals and media outlets.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood — a key member of Labour Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s government — posted on X Sunday that emergency responders believe the situation is contained.

“I would like to thank the emergency services for their swift response to the major incident in Gloucestershire this morning and their reassurance that they believe the incident is contained,” she wrote in the post. “Whilst investigations are ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

“The attempted terrorist attack may come as a surprise to many people but not to the U.S. President and not to me,” Reform Party leader Nigel Farage said in an official video statement he posted to X on Monday. “I know that over the course of the last few months counter-terrorism have conducted a massive investigation into Iranian nationals living in this country, worried that something like the Fairford plot would come along.”

Farage called the weekend attack a “massive wake-up call,” and a “national emergency.” He said he’s warned British officials of the IRGC and received intelligence that the Iranian Regime was using boats in the channel to bring operatives into Britain.

President Donald Trump told reporters on Sunday that the arrested suspects were “looking to do big damage,” outside of Air Force One.

“We had them under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort, and working with the British worked out great,” he said according to the BBC.

While the CTP says the investigation is still ongoing, the quick release of the suspects in light of early morning evacuations of nearby residents at the time of the arrest has left many alarmed, the outlet claimed.

Authorities apprehended the suspects after police received reports of three suspicious vehicles traveling towards RAF Fairford, according to the BBC. The air base is located near a residential area. Approximately 85 households were awakened by police knocking on their doors and evacuated from the area, at the time of the arrest on early Sunday morning.

Dr. Patrick Bury, a professor in Warfare and Counter-Terrorism at Bath University told the BBC that “something was clearly afoot.”

“If you look at how tight lipped the security service and government are being, it would suggest they are taking it very seriously,” Bury told the outlet.
