Huawei Technologies announced on May 25 that it will produce industry-leading semiconductors using a new technology in five years, according to news coverage.

The major Chinese tech company said its new chip technology is projected to deliver capabilities comparable to 1.4-nanometer process technology by 2031, CNBC reported. The announcement comes as various U.S. export controls have curbed many Chinese companies’ access to advanced chipmaking equipment.

Huawei Rotating Chairman and Deputy Chairman Xu Zhijun suggested in a recent interview that the company is thankful to the U.S. government for helping spur their chip tech growth, Huawei Central reported on May 29.

“If the U.S. hadn’t forced our country, our companies, and our industry, we wouldn’t have done something like this,” he said, according to Huawei Central. “But we are also grateful to the U.S. for enabling our country’s semiconductor industry chain to truly grow. Now the momentum is very good, and everyone recognizes and supports it.”

Huawei did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment on Tuesday.

Huawei has faced various sanctions from the U.S. since 2018, as well as allegations of espionage and involvement in human rights abuses, according to Britannica Money. The Department of Justice also charged Huawei and two U.S. subsidiaries in February 2020 with racketeering conspiracy and conspiracy to steal trade secrets.

California-based chipmaker Nvidia also announced a new chip for personal computers on Monday, BBC News reported.

“This reinvention of the computer is as big of a deal as the reinvention of the phone into what we now know as the smartphone,” Nvidia President and CEO Jensen Huang said on Monday, per BBC.

Huang notably told CNBC during a May 21 interview that Nvidia has now “largely conceded” China’s artificial intelligence chip sector to Huawei.
