Radio host Charlamagne Tha God criticized Democratic Gov. Janet Mills of Maine on Monday for continuing to advocate for transgender biological male athletes to compete in female sports.

President Donald Trump clashed with Mills over the issue on Friday at the White House after the president asked the governor if she would adhere to his Feb. 5 executive order on the matter. Charlamagne, on “The Breakfast Club,” said Mills’ state’s opposition to the order is politically damaging.

“Why are folks still talking about trans athletes? Like that is a losing talking point. America’s not with it, and they keep making a micro a macro with that conversation,” Charlamagne said. “It impacts such a small, small group of people, but it makes a whole lot of people think folks lack common sense, so why are they even having that conversation?”

“And I can’t believe it’s states that still want to die on that hill,” he continued. “Like none of these states have a high percentage of trans athletes, so what’s the issue?”

In response to Trump’s question regarding whether Mills would “comply” with his executive order, she claimed that she would follow both “state and federal law.”

“Well, we are the federal law… You better do it because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t,” Trump countered.

“We’ll see you in court,” Mills added, with Trump responding, “Good! I’ll see you in court. I look forward to that. That should be a really easy one.”

Trump also forecast that Mills’ position may doom her in future elections.

“Enjoy your life after governor, because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics,” the president said.

The Maine Principal’s Association announced on Feb. 7 that biological men would still be permitted to compete in women’s sports. The Department of Education subsequently announced it was launching a Title IX investigation into Maine’s education department and one school district for violating the executive order shortly after Trump and Mills’ heated White House exchange.

Nearly 80% of Americans do not believe biological males should be allowed to participate in women’s sports, according to a January New York Times/Ipsos poll.
