Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner reminded former Democratic Pennsylvania Rep. Patrick Murphy that inflation reached record-highs during President Joe Biden’s administration as he attempted to pin high egg prices on President Donald Trump.
Egg prices increased 37% from late January of 2024 due to inflation and the bird flu epidemic, prompting the Department of Agriculture to warn that these prices could rise more than 20% this year. As Murphy tried to blame Trump for these prices, Faulkner reminded the former congressman that egg prices rose during Biden’s presidency when inflation reached a peak of 9% in June 2022 and remained staggeringly high throughout his presidency.
“When you had the price of eggs and inflation, the price of eggs was $3.65 in November, it’s now over $5. Hey, what’s going on here? We elected this guy to help our economy [and] drive our economy, make prices go down,” Murphy said.
“So wait a minute, because I don’t want a conversation with false flags in it. When eggs were up under your party’s president, the nation’s president, Biden, they were up because of inflation and they were up a lot more because inflation was rocking 9%. Eggs now are being pressed upon for a lot of health reason that we have. We have a bird flu that’s jumped hose basically so there are a lot of things pressing on that,” Faulkner said.

Murphy credited Biden’s efforts to provide COVID relief as the reason inflation rose, prompting Faulkner to point out that it went up throughout his entire presidency.
“[The prices] went up and then [Biden] controlled inflation and they went down and that’s why we need to make sure we have the right economic policies that affect American families and that’s what I agree with,” Murphy said.
“You also realize that between November and two weeks ago, Biden was still president. We’re chasing our tail right now and the dog isn’t even barking anymore,” Faulkner replied.
Prices rose more than 20% during Biden’s term in office, jumping from 1.4% at the beginning of Biden’s presidency to its peak of 9% before and finally falling below 3% for the first time in two years in July. The core consumer price index (CPI), which excludes the volatile categories of energy and food, rose 3.2% year-over-year in that same month.
Many economists blamed the soaring inflation on the Biden administration spending $1.9 trillion and $750 billion on the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act at the beginning of his administration. The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan included stimulus checks for Americans, debt bailouts for local and state governments and funding for vaccine rollouts, while the Inflation Reduction Act allocated $370 billion to green initiatives aimed at combating climate change.
Egg prices rose from $1.46 per dozen when Biden first entered office in January 2021 to $4.14 in December 2024, the final full month of his presidency, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Bird flu, one of the other main causes of the egg price hike, killed a record number of egg-laying hens and led to a rise in prices in 2022 alone.
Bird flu has killed over 300 million poultry birds worldwide since 2021. More than 30 million chickens have been killed by the disease in the last 3 months, shortening the regular supply of egg-laying chickens and leading to a spike in the price of eggs, according to The New York Times.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt blamed Biden and his Department of Agriculture for the “mass killing” of 100 million chickens for the rise in egg prices during a Jan. 28 briefing.
