A New Jersey teen allegedly shot and killed his family minutes before the New Year, according to a report Monday.
A 16-year-old boy is currently in custody after allegedly shooting and killing his family and a family friend about 15 minutes before the New Year in Long Branch, according to authorities, reported BuzzFeed News. Authorities arrested the unidentified boy without incident and is expected to be charged with four counts of murder.
The teen used a semi-automatic rifle that was legally bought and registered by a family member, according to officials. The boy allegedly used the weapon to kill his father Steven Kologi, 44, mother Linda Kologi, 42, sister Brittany Kologi, 18, and family friend, Mary Schultz, 70. His brother and grandfather were able to escape the scene, according to a statement by Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
“It is a terribly tragic incident,” added Gramiccioni.
The teen’s grandfather and brother were allegedly not targeted and left the location unharmed, reported abc7. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.
