London Mayor Calls On Gov’t To Cancel Trump’s State Visit

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said President Donald Trump’s state visit this fall should be canceled, as the two continue to trade barbs over London’s response to terrorism.
Trump mocked Khan on Twitter for saying there is “no reason to be alarmed” after the deadly terror attack. Khan’s office pointed out that he never used those words, which Trump regarded to be a “pathetic excuse.”

Politicians have urged Prime Minister Theresa May to withdraw Trump’s invitation over his criticism of Khan. The mayor backed the call Monday, saying Trump is wrong about “many things.”
“I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for,” Khan said in an interview with Channel 4. “When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong. There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.”
May said Khan has been doing “a good job” in the aftermath of Saturday’s London Bridge attack. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said the government has no plans to retract Trump’s invitation.
“I do not wish to interpose myself into a row between the Mayor of London and the President of the United States. I have been there myself, I have done that,” Johnson said Tuesday, according to The Daily Telegraph. “What I will say is that as a former holder of Sadiq’s office is that I think he is entirely right to say what he said to reassure the people of his city about the presence of armed officers on the streets and it is entirely right that he should speak as he should.”
