Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said he’s considering running for president in 2028.

In a preview interview for CBS Sunday Morning, set to air Sunday, a reporter asked Paul about a recent article suggesting he might enter the race. Paul responded, admitting he’s thinking about running.

“There was recently a headline in the Washington Examiner. Rand Paul sounds like he’s running for president,” CBS’ National Correspondent Robert Costa said.

“I don’t know yet, so maybe they know something I don’t know. We’re thinking about it, and I would say 50-50. We’ll make a decision after the election,” Paul said.

Paul previously hinted he’s considering a run for president in 2028, saying he will make a final decision after the 2026 midterm elections. He has framed the possibility as representing a libertarian-leaning, free-market wing of the GOP rather than the populist Trump-era approach.

Media outlets have included Paul among potential Republican contenders in early discussions about the post-Trump landscape. While he has teased the idea in interviews and public appearances, he has not formally announced.

This isn’t the first time Paul has considered a presidential bid. He ran for the Republican nomination in 2016 with a libertarian-focused platform. He ultimately dropped out after underperforming in the Iowa caucuses and returned to focus on his Senate reelection.
