Texas State Attorney General Ken Paxton claimed that he may drop out of the Texas Senate race if the Senate lifts the filibuster to pass the SAVE Act in an X post on Thursday.
Paxton, who forced Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn into a runoff election after receiving 40.7% of the vote in Tuesday’s primary, wrote that he would “consider dropping out” of the vicious primary if the Senate passed the legislation. The SAVE Act passed in the House of Representatives in February and would require proof of citizenship for federal elections, among other election reforms longed for by Republicans.
“The Save America Act is the most important bill the U.S. Senate could ever pass, and I’m committed to helping President Trump get it done,” Paxton wrote on X. “I would consider dropping out of this race if Senate Leadership agrees to lift the filibuster and passes the SAVE America Act.”
Paxton also attacked Cornyn, calling him “a coward who has refused to support abolishing the filibuster” in the past and reaffirming his support for President Donald Trump.
“No one has been more loyal to Donald Trump than me,” Paxton wrote. “Fighting the stolen 2020 election, being in Mar-a-Lago when he announced his 2024 campaign, and standing with him in NY in the face of lawfare.”
Some Senate Republicans are worried that the “talking filibuster,” suggested by some as the only way forward for the SAVE Act, claiming the tactic would force Senate Democrats to deliver speeches in order to delay a vote on the bill.
Trump announced on Wednesday that he would soon endorse a candidate, writing in a Truth Social post that the primary “cannot, for the good of the Party, and our Country, itself, be allowed to go on any longer.” He continued, “IT MUST STOP NOW! We have an easy to beat, Radical Left Opponent, and we have to TOTALLY FOCUS on putting him away, quickly and decisively! Both John and Ken ran great races, but not good enough. Now, this one, must be PERFECT!”
The president called his endorsements “virtually insurmountable” and said, “I will be making my Endorsement soon, and will be asking that candidate that I don’t Endorse to immediately DROP OUT OF THE RACE!”
Trump is expected to endorse Cornyn in the race, according to The Atlantic who cited anonymous sources “briefed on the deliberations.”
