Fox News host Greg Gutfeld tore into progressive critics Monday, saying that many on the left lack even a basic understanding of how the rest of the world actually lives.

In a HuffPost article about the 2026 Winter Olympics, the author wrote that “If waving the American flag or chanting ‘USA!’ turns you off right now, you’re not alone,” which critics said treated open displays of American pride during the Olympics as something problematic. Had former Vice President Kamala Harris been at the top of the ticket, Gutfeld said on “The Five,” then media coverage would have focused less on the athletes and more on identity politics.

“Could you imagine if Kamala Harris were president, how political this would have been? She would have sent Rachel Levine to the locker room to celebrate gold and trans in the locker room at the same time,” Gutfeld said. “I like Jack Hughes. I think it’s hypocritical though. Why is missing teeth appealing in hockey, but not when I fall down and smash my teeth. We loved Alyssa Liu, right? She won the gold, and people were saying ‘How can the right celebrate her because she’s woke?’ It’s kind of a self-own to them and a compliment to us.”

Gutfeld said the backlash revealed an unwillingness among some critics to celebrate American athletes unless they align politically.

“Their response reveals that they can’t celebrate a person unless they are somewhat or definitely on their political side, but we can. We can. We don’t care, and why would you want to be on that divide? ‘I don’t like you. I won’t celebrate your win because you’re not as woke as me,'” Gutfeld added. “I think we should all feel good about her, and if you can’t [then] there’s something wrong. The shut-in bloggers at Huffington Post would kill to win something in their lives. And also when they say, ‘Shame on America,’ they don’t understand that most people in the world want to come here.”

Gutfeld accused progressive critics of lacking real-world perspective.

“They have no context, right? America is bad. America is the worst country ever. Except for the rest of the countries. That’s the part they leave out. This is the great myth that somehow the left and the woke are more cultured, more aware than we are. Like that we’re shut-ins. We’re dumb rednecks. No, they are not worldly. They don’t even know how the world is. They think that thinking globally is visiting that ethnic restaurant in their neighborhood,” Gutfeld said. “They know nothing about the actual world, or they would love this place. When you actually travel like a lot of these athletes do around the world, you know how great it is to be here. You go to another country [and] you’ll experience their limitations, and then you’ll be happy to get home, but the left, they get their African history from Joy Reid. They don’t know shit.”

Alysa Liu won gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Thursday, capping a stunning comeback after stepping away from figure skating for more than two years following the 2022 Beijing Games. The 2025 ISU World champion posted a season-best 147.52 in the free skate for a combined 214.91 total, becoming the first American woman to win Olympic gold in the event since Sarah Hughes in 2002.
