Former Democratic strategist Dan Turrentine said Tuesday that Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez complaining about the scrutiny of her overseas gaffes to The New York Times was baffling.

Ocasio-Cortez whined to the NYT on Monday about how conservatives’ short online clips of her stumbles eclipsed her talking points. Turrentine, on “The Huddle,” said on the show that Ocasio-Cortez’s griping to the NYT contradicted her reputation for being adept at online communication.

“It was a horrible idea. It’s now getting to the point where the kind of cover-up is worse than the initial crime … She called the New York Times. We talked about how her brand is social media savvy. She’s young,” Turrentine said. “She constantly is online, kind of giving and taking, and just in the game. And next to [Democratic California Gov.] Gavin Newsom, it’s who people said gets this modern world better than anyone else. To argue that basically it’s unfair that people are taking clips and sending them around in short snippets — duh!”

“It’s pathetic and embarrassing for her to make this kind of whining argument that when your calling card is that you’re kind of the party queen of social media,” he added. “So I don’t understand what she was doing … I think it is just a stunning kind of immature, and I think — I mean, I said to you guys this weekend, ‘You know, not a big deal in the long run. She’ll move past it.’ This just now has more and more people kind of laughing at her within the party. It’s amazing.”

Ocasio-Cortez delivered a 40-second rambling response at the Munich Security Conference on Friday when Bloomberg Television’s Francine Lacqua asked her if the U.S. should send troops to protect Taiwan if China invaded the contested Asian island.

“You know, I think that — uh — this is such a — you know, I think that this is a — this is, of course a — uh — a very long standing policy of the United States,” she said. “And, I think what we are hoping for is that we want to make sure that we never get to that point.”

Moreover, Ocasio-Cortez tried to mock Secretary of State Marco Rubio for factually stating that Spanish explorers brought horses to Mexico during her Sunday remarks at Technical University of Berlin’s TEDx event. She claimed that native Mexicans and the descendants of African slaves would beg to differ with Rubio on Spain bringing over horses, ranches and rodeos, though they were, in fact, introduced by Spanish explorers.

Furthermore, Ocasio-Cortez falsely asserted that Venezuela was “below the equator” during the same event on Sunday.
