Pollster Matt Towery warned Friday that Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s presumed 2028 presidential bid could reshape the Democratic Party for years.
Ocasio-Cortez declined to rule out a 2028 White House bid during an appearance at the Munich Security Conference, saying she would move “expeditiously” to impose a wealth tax if she becomes president. Towery said on “The Ingraham Angle” that a 2028 showdown between Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom would drag both contenders away from the center.
“And she is going to force Gavin Newsom to be less moderate, and he is going to force her to be less moderate, and they’re both going to squeeze out any possibility of a true moderate Democrat,” Towery said.
Towery pointed to new polling trends to explain why a potential Ocasio-Cortez 2028 presidential run could reshape the Democratic Party.

“I don’t think that among normal voters, this kind of thing plays well,” guest host Charlie Hurt said.
Towery responded.
“Right now, what our polling is showing is that more and more Democrats are saying that they identify with socialism. And this is a growing trend, and it’s occurring very quickly. So they’re playing to a party that they think is going to exist when they’re ready to run for president in this next cycle,” Towery said.
A national survey said that support for democratic socialism has grown over the past decade, with a rising share of Americans, particularly Democrats, expressing favorable views of socialist policy ideas. The findings point to a shift within the Democratic electorate, as more voters embrace policies traditionally associated with the party’s progressive wing.
Many political analysts have floated the idea that Ocasio-Cortez could mount a White House bid in 2028. NewsNation analyst Chris Cillizza said in May that Ocasio-Cortez’s decision not to seek a senior post on the House Oversight Committee suggests broader ambitions beyond Capitol Hill.
A March 2025 CNN/SSRS survey showed that a majority of Democrats and left-leaning independents view her as the figure who most embodies the party’s foundational principles. About one-third of Democratic voters overall, and 42% of those younger than 35, describe themselves as Democratic Socialists, according to CNN data chief Harry Enten.
