Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not rule out a possible presidential run in 2028 during her appearance at the Munich Security Conference on Friday.
An interviewer asked Ocasio-Cortez if she plans to impose a wealth tax — a tax on an individual’s assets and net worth — if she becomes president. The congresswoman did not confirm or deny whether she would run for president, but said a wealth tax should be imposed “expeditiously.”
“So when you run for president, are you going to impose a wealth tax or a billionaire’s tax?” the interviewer asked.
“I don’t think that we have to wait for any one president to impose a wealth tax, I think that it needs to be done expeditiously,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Many political analysts have speculated about Ocasio-Cortez’s potential plans to enter the 2028 presidential primary. NewsNation’s Chris Cillizza suggested in May that she did not pursue a top role in the House Oversight Committee because she plans to run for president.
A CNN/SSRS poll from March 2025 found that most Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents believed Ocasio-Cortez was the leader “who best reflects the core values” of their party. Thirty-three percent of all Democratic voters and 42% of those under the age of 35 identify as Democratic Socialists, CNN chief data reporter Harry Enten reported on Thursday.
In 2019, Ocasio-Cortez proposed a 70% top marginal tax rate for those with an income above $10 million. She also stated that no one should be allowed to have a billion dollars.
Ocasio-Cortez has not publicly revealed her future political ambitions. In October, she dodged a question by MS NOW’s Chris Hayes on whether she threatened to launch a primary challenge against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer if he reopened the government.
Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom has also been considered a potential candidate in the 2028 race. He told CBS News during an interview in October that he was seriously considering a presidential run.
