NewsNation host Chris Cuomo urged Democrats to refrain from impeaching President Donald Trump if they regain control of Congress after the 2026 midterm elections during a Tuesday episode of “The Chris Cuomo Project.”

Cuomo noted on his podcast that Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz reportedly told Trump that if Republicans lost the House and Senate, he would be “impeached every single week” for two years. The NewsNation host argued Democrats should not pursue impeachment because there would be no chance of removal and that the process would not benefit the nation.

“Did you hear what Ted Cruz said to him reportedly, allegedly? ‘You’re going to lose House seats and Senate seats and they’re going to impeach you every day.’ Now, I really hope that last part doesn’t happen,” Cuomo said. “Why? You don’t have the votes to remove him.”

“It is a political process — impeachment. Okay? … You do not have the votes you need to remove him. It will not happen,” he added. “So, why put us through it? And any high-minded idea you give us, I just point you to the last two and see if that helped the country in any way.”

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democrats should not prioritize impeaching Trump in the final two years of his presidency during a Dec. 15 episode of USA Today’s “The Excerpt.”

“[T]hat’s not an incidental thing you say — ‘We’re going to do that.’ No, there has to be cause,” she said. “There has to be reason.”

House Democrats impeached Trump twice in his first term while Pelosi was speaker.

The first took place on Dec. 18, 2019, for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress over a scandal regarding Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The second occurred on Jan. 13, 2021, for “incitement of insurrection” over the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Moreover, Democratic Texas Rep. Al Green has unsuccessfully filed several articles of impeachment against Trump amid his second term.

While Democrats have claimed that Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct during his second term, many have avoided pledging to impeach him due to the likelihood Republicans will maintain control of the Senate and possible electoral ramifications, ABC News reported on Jan. 17.
