Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly praised President Donald Trump’s decision to nominate former Federal Reserve Gov. Kevin Warsh to succeed current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell on Friday.
Trump announced Warsh’s nomination to lead the central bank in a Trust Social post on Friday morning, claiming “he will go down as one of the GREAT Fed Chairmen, maybe the best.” Carney, a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, wrote in a statement posted to X that Warsh is “a fantastic choice to lead the world’s most important central bank at this crucial time.”
Warsh could not immediately be reached for comment. Carney’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
Carney previously served as governor of the Bank of England (BoE) from 2013 to 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile. He and Warsh have known each other for several years, and during his tenure as BOE governor, Carney recruited Warsh to helm a review of the major bank’s transparency in 2014, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
The Liberal Canadian leader made headlines on Jan. 15 when he declared a “new world order” while talking about his partnership with China during his trip to Beijing at the time.
“We’re heartened by the leadership of [Chinese] President Xi Jinping and the speed with which our relationship has progressed,” Carney also said during his mid-January visit.
The following day, he told reporters that “the world is still determining what that order is going to be,” before launching into a two-minute response, when asked to clarify what he had meant by “new world order.” On the same day, the Carney-led Canadian government announced a “new strategic partnership” with China “focused on energy, agri-food, and trade.”
Trump threatened in a Jan. 24 Truth Social post — in which he referred to Carney as “Governor” — to slap Canada with a 100% tariff if the country “makes a deal with China.”
Warsh served as a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors from 2006 to 2011, and currently is the Shepard Family Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Economics at the Hoover Institution and a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, according to his biography on Georgetown University’s website.
