President Donald Trump announced a “framework” for a deal involving Greenland had been reached in a Wednesday post on Truth Social, saying tariffs would not take effect on Feb. 1.
Trump threatened to impose a 10% tariff on several European countries who opposed his proposal to purchase Greenland Saturday. Trump said that he had a “productive” meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in his announcement.
“Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,” Trump posted. “This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations.”
“Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland,” Trump continued. “Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Trump floated buying the island from Denmark during his first term in office, but the Danish government rejected the offer. The United States has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland since 1867, with President Harry S Truman formally offering Denmark $100 million in exchange for the island in 1946 after World War II.
Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom deployed a total of 37 personnel to join Danish forces for exercises on Greenland in response to Trump’s comment.
