Fox News contributor Byron York on Wednesday broke down what he described as a familiar Trump negotiating playbook, saying the president deliberately opened with an outsized demand about Greenland to seize leverage and shape the entire conversation.

Trump has insisted the United States must take control of Greenland for national security reasons and has threatened sweeping tariffs on European countries to pressure them into surrendering full authority over the island. During a panel discussion on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” York laid out what he described as a textbook example of President Donald Trump’s negotiating style.

“This was kind of classic Trump, wasn’t it? Trump wants something, and then he asks for 10 times that. The other side flips out, and they go back and forth and go back and forth. It becomes a huge news story,” York told host Bret Baier.

York said that the endgame was predictable, with the other side eventually offering a deal close to what Trump sought at the outset.

“Finally, they make an offer. He agrees to it, and it’s kind of what they could have gotten in the first place,” York said.

“He says they’re wonderful people and happy to work with them,” Baier chimed in. “And suddenly it’s this dismount that we could predict by how it’s set up at the beginning.”

“Yes, and the other side’s happy because they think they dodged a bullet,” York said. “So it’s just classic Trump.”

Trump announced that the United States wants Greenland to build a Golden Dome missile defense system designed to intercept ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles capable of striking the homeland with conventional or nuclear warheads, according to the Department of Defense. He said the system is necessary to stop Russia or China from gaining a foothold on the island, insisting Denmark lacks the capacity to defend Greenland against either power.

Greenland’s position between the United States and Russia, along with its vast reserves of critical minerals, has fueled U.S. concerns about Moscow’s and Beijing’s ambitions. Trump said the United States will impose a 10% tariff on Denmark, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, starting Feb. 1, for opposing the takeover, with the rate climbing to 25% on June 1 and remaining in place until what he described as a “Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” is achieved.

European leaders pushed back after the announcement, saying they would not allow themselves to be intimidated by Trump’s tariff strategy.
