Comedians Bill Maher and Dana Carvey criticized far-left celebrities and elitists on Monday for lecturing everyday Americans about how they should vote.
Maher argued on the “Club Random Podcast” that Americans were turned off by millionaire elitists telling them to vote for former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 election. Carvey added that the celebrities’ constant talks about politics hurt the Democrats since their commentary was a turnoff to the everyday American.
“[Celebrities] just make it worse. They just make it worse, celebrities do, when they speak and they’re almost always on one side of the political divide,” Maher said. “And that’s basically the side that I vote for. You know, as I always say to my woke friends, we voted for the same person, you’re just why [former Vice President Kamala Harris] lost. I could gather, and I think I will because it will be funny, just the incredibly stupid things that celebrities say about politics or finance or something. So then if you’re the person out there going, ‘how could you live on $100 million a year. Vote Kamala Harris!’ It’s like, that’s game over.”
“You can’t have movie stars and politicians that we know have hundreds of millions of dollars lecturing you. It’s just the elitist thing that came out of all that, you know, the Democrats. It wasn’t a positive thing, they’re not gonna do that in 2028. I’ll bet they’ll have real people,” Carvey said.

Harris’ campaign raked in millions with the help of celebrities and spent $1 million to have a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey. Celebrities including Stevie Wonder, Jessica Alba, Demi Lovato and Lily Tomlin attended a fundraiser for Harris held in Los Angeles in October 2024, which helped raise millions of dollars for the campaign.
The campaign also spent roughly $100,000 to build a custom set for Harris’ interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast.
President Donald Trump appeared on podcasts that largely reach young listeners, including “The Joe Rogan Experience” and Theo Von.
Maher has been critical of the modern Democratic Party, particularly on their shift to the far-left. He told actor-comedian Patton Oswalt in November 2025 that Democrats have broken away from science by promoting gender ideology and argued in an April 2025 interview with the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk that they will continue to lose elections if they support biological males competing in women’s sports.
