The U.S. is offering Ukraine long-term security guarantees as part of a proposed peace plan, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after the latest talks with President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday.

Zelenskyy said Monday the U.S. and Ukraine are in agreement about “strong security guarantees” as part of the ongoing peace talks, but that he would like those unspecified guarantees to last much longer than the 15 year term on the table. Trump said the two nations are “closer than ever before” to an agreement despite unresolved issues such as Russian demands for additional territory in the Donbas region and the future of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

“Without security guarantees, realistically, this war will not end,” Zelenskyy told reporters via WhatsApp, according to the Associated Press.

Ukraine has been reticent to give up territory to Russia, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled little interest in continuing negotiations after pounding Kyiv in a wave of strikes just a day before Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy. Trump expressed optimism in his comments, saying he’s “on the side of peace” and hailing the talks as productive.

Zelenskyy was somewhat more tempered in his reactions, highlighting that Russia would likely not agree to a ceasefire that he says is desperately needed.

“As for a withdrawal from Donbas, it is no secret that Russia wants this,” Zelenskyy said in another X post Monday. “In their fantasies, they would like us not to exist on the territory of our own country at all. These fantasies have been around for years. But we have our own land, our own territorial integrity, our own state, and our own interests.”

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
