Podcast host Joe Rogan accused California of enabling mountain lions to prey on residents’ pets during a Tuesday episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience.”
The Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) found that 52% of mountain lions had eaten cats, dogs or other domestic animals, SFGate reported in 2016. Rogan appeared to reference the report on his podcast, arguing it was necessary to hunt mountain lions to prevent them from attacking pets.

“[T]hey’re doing nothing to curb the population … people go, ‘Oh, it’s okay. Let nature do its thing.’ No, it doesn’t do its thing. It kills your dog,” Rogan said. “Okay? One of the things they found out in San Francisco, in the Bay Area, was when they do shoot these mountain lions, they’ve done an analysis of their diet. It’s 50% dogs and cats. 50% of their diet is eating people’s pets. So they’re hunting people’s pets.”
“That means you are — if you’re a dog lover — you’re allowing a monster to eat your dog because you think that’s the right thing to do and to be kind with nature,” he added. “No. You have to hunt them. You have to get them the fuck away from you and keep a healthy population of them. And if you don’t do that, it comes back to bite you in the dick.”
The DFW analysis examined the stomach contents of 83 mountain lions, according to SFGate.

Rogan also played and reacted to a video of his guest Cameron Hanes’ brother recounting getting chased by a mountain lion in California.
“That is the consequences of letting monsters live in your neighborhood. That’s real. And all these wilderness-loving people — I guarantee you, you’re not out there as much as that guy is. I guarantee you’re not out there as much as you are or you are,” Rogan said to his guests after they watched the video. “That’s the difference between people that really understand what we’re talking about and people that are looking at this from this knee-jerk love and compassion for nature perspective.”
Moreover, a mountain lion bit an 11-year-old girl on the arm outside a Malibu residence in August, KTLA reported, citing officials. Authorities said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the incident and the child was transported to a hospital and expected to recover.
There are an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 mountain lions throughout California, according to NBC Los Angeles.
