Former independent and Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin laughed out loud on Wednesday when Fox News host Martha MacCallum asked if he agreed that Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett is her party’s top messenger.

Radio host Charlamagne tha God asserted on “Hot and Bothered” Tuesday that Crockett is “the most effective messenger that the Democratic Party has right now.” After MacCallum played a clip of Charlamagne’s comments on “The Story,” she asked if Manchin agreed with them, causing him to laugh before saying he did not.

“I don’t [agree] … I think it’s someone maybe we don’t really know that has a high profile right now, but has been very effective on the Democratic Party somewhere,” Manchin said. “There’s a lot of good people on both sides. I have always looked for the betterment of how do we get people together that puts their country before the party.”

“I belong to one party, the American Party. It has two wings to it, I guess. It has a Democrat and a Republican wing,” he added. “But they should be coming together at the end where the country basically is the purpose for we’re all here together.”

Manchin announced in May 2024 that he was leaving the Democratic Party and registering as an independent.

Crockett has become notorious for her racially-charged rants and inflammatory attacks on Republicans, including calling wheelchair-bound Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “Governor Hot Wheels.” She has also repeatedly compared President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.

Yet Charlamagne had nothing but praise for the Democrat. “Jasmine Crockett is actually what the Democrats should be leaning into,” he said. “Because she is a phenomenal messenger.”

Crockett said on on SiriusXM’s “The Lurie Daniel Favors Show” on Oct. 22 that she was weighing a campaign for the Senate during the 2026 midterms. However, NewsNation political contributor Chris Cillizza warned on his YouTube channel on Oct. 23 that if she were to run, she would likely hand a victory to Republicans.

“The problem is it’s very difficult for me to see how Crockett would reach out to the middle, particularly in a state like Texas where there just are not enough Democrats,” Cillizza said. “Even if you get all the Democrats to vote for you, you don’t win. So I think this would be a dream scenario for Republicans. “
