Sean Spicer Breaks Down Where Trump Admin ‘Missing The Mark’ On Economic Messaging

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Friday’s “The Morning Meeting” that President Donald Trump’s economic messaging needed to be revamped following Republican election losses.

Democratic candidates beat their Republican opponents on Tuesday after campaigning on affordability. Spicer said on the 2WAY show that the Trump administration must admit that the issue has not been fully resolved and that more must be done to make America more affordable.

“It is factual that most prices, gas, eggs, bread, have gone down … I believe where the Trump administration’s missing the mark is that if you think about when Trump left office, and I’m just making this up, things were $3,” Spicer said. “They went to $5 under [former President Joe] Biden. Biden said, ‘Don’t believe it. It’s transitory.’ Whatever. That’s different. What’s happened in a lot of cases is prices have gone down to, say, $4.”

“Where the Trump administration, I think, needs to do a better job is sort of inserting the comma: ‘We’re doing better. We need to do more. We know that we’re working hard to get you back to where you were,'” he added. “The bottom line is, in Trump’s mind — and I get what he’s doing — he’s looking at the price of gas, etc., and it’s going down, but it’s not where it was when he left office … he has to say, ‘Guys, things are going in the right direction … it’s not where we need to be finally. I’m going to continue to fight for you.'”

Food inflation cooled to 3.1% year-over-year in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Oct. 24. However, despite Trump asserting America is becoming more affordable under his tenure, bananas are 8.6% more expensive due to tariffs, while beef prices have surged — something the president is focused on, according to the New York Post.

Moreover, Amazon prices have increased nearly 13% on average in 2025, while prices at Target and Walmart have both risen over 5% in 2025, according to an analysis by DataWeave, CNBC reported.

Furthermore, Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair told Politico on Wednesday that the GOP fumbled the 2025 elections because they did not discuss affordability and said that Trump would be prioritizing the issue.

“The president is very keyed into what’s going on, and he recognizes, like anybody, that it takes time to do an economic turnaround, but all the fundamentals are there, and I think you’ll see him be very, very focused on prices and cost of living,” Blair told Politico.
