Former Democratic strategist Dan Turrentine said on Wednesday’s “The Morning Meeting” that multiple far-left staffers in Washington, D.C., privately told him they appreciated President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown.

After Trump deployed the National Guard and took other measures in August, the district did not report a homicide for nearly two weeks, and other violent crimes dropped significantly. Turrentine said on the 2WAY show that Democrats are struggling to publicly message on the situation since they want to avoid praising Trump.

“After being in D.C. for two days, it is remarkable how much this issue is tying Democrats in knots,” Turrentine said. “Because I talked to several staffers who said, ‘You know, it was actually really nice to go into Union Station and see the markets full again, to see people in there, the homeless people out.’ These are super progressive staffers who in public are like total ‘Trump is Hitler,’ who were like, ‘Man, it’s been great!'”

“Most people are advising their members: ‘Stay silent, don’t touch this.’ Because it’s working, but they don’t want to give Trump credit in public,” he added. “And it is remarkable how much they’re tied in pretzels.”

Democratic Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed gratitude for the increase of officers during an Aug. 27 press conference.

“We greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what [Metropolitan Police Department] MPD has been able to do in this city … for carjackings, the difference between this period, this 20-day period of this federal surge, and last year represents a 87% reduction in carjackings in Washington, D.C.,” Bowser said.

Bowser also signed an order on Sept. 2 directing local law enforcement to continue collaborating with federal agencies beyond the public safety emergency Trump declared.

Over 130 arrests were made in the nation’s capital Tuesday evening, a White House official told Daily Caller White House correspondent Reagan Reese. They included violent crimes such as assault with a dangerous weapon and assault on a police officer.

The total arrests during the crackdown reached 2,310, Reese reported.

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced on Aug. 27 that his department would resume direct control of Union Station. WJLA reporter John Gonzalez reported the following day that the station “looks better than it has in years, cleaner than it has in years.”
