White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller hinted Thursday on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” that President Donald Trump would consider touring major crime-ridden cities in the United States.
On Aug. 11, Trump announced the deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., invoking Section 40 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, before later suggesting he might send troops to cities like Chicago or New York City. Fox’s Laura Ingraham said she has previously urged Trump to tour such cities, asking Miller if it was something the president might do.
“That is certainly something that he would consider,” Miller said. “The president is committed to the idea [that] our cities should be great, our cities should be safe, the parks should be beautiful, the schools should be amazing, the sidewalks should be pristine. All of those things are possible if you just take the city back from the drug addicts, the vagrants, the criminal gangs, and the hoodlums. This is a doable thing. This is achievable. President Trump is proving it in Washington, D.C.”

“Here’s one more point,” Miller added. “There are 30,000, think about this, there are 30,000 criminal illegal aliens right now in custody in California that are in state and local custody that are going to be set free by Gavin Newsom that they are refusing to turn over to ICE. In other words, they’re illegal aliens. They were arrested for committing state and local crimes. ICE said, ‘Turn them over to us so we can deport them.’ The California government has refused, so all 30,000 are going to be set free back onto the street to rape, maim, and murder. Think about that.”
Trump’s decision to crack down on crime in the nation’s capital came after a slew of crimes in Washington, D.C. attracted national attention. Among the most recent were the brutal attack against a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer and the fatal June 30 shooting of Republican intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym.
Democrats and legacy media pundits, citing local police data, have said Washington, D.C.’s crime rate dropped 35% in 2024. The statistics, however, left out crimes such as felonies and aggravated assaults. In July, the Metropolitan Police Department said an investigation was opened against D.C. police Commander Michael Pulliam for allegedly altering crime statistics in his district, according to NBC Washington.
Despite the pushback from Democrats, a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released Monday reported that 54% of registered voters said Trump’s crime-fighting efforts in the nation’s capital are “justified and necessary.”
Chicago Democrats have additionally fought back against the Trump administration’s suggestion to fight that city’s crime problem. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson held a press conference Monday to discuss the matter. While speaking to reporters and the public, Pritzker urged Trump not to deploy troops. Johnson highlighted what he said were Chicago’s lowered crime stats.
According to ABC7 Chicago, police data through Aug. 16 shows homicides in the city down 25% compared to 2023. Over the last 12 months, there have been 474 homicides, while the yearly average between 2021 and 2023 hit 722, the outlet reported.
New York City Democrats have touted lower crime statistics while suggesting the National Guard could help the city. However, while reports have indicated that overall crime in New York City has dropped, years of underreported rapes have skewed New York Police Department statistics, according to the New York Post. The outlet reported that while NYPD data shows declines in murders and burglaries, 517 rapes were reported in the second quarter of 2025, up from 448 during the same period in 2024.
According to U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Jeanine Pirro on Monday, the federal takeover in the nation’s capital has led to 1,007 arrests and 111 illegal firearm confiscations.
