Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey spent an entire minute defending the “trans community” immediately after a trans-identifying male murdered two children at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minnesota.
Authorities identified the gunman as Robin Westman, a man in his early 20s, who changed his name from Robert in 2019 because he identified as a woman. During a press conference regarding the shooting, Frey extended his sympathies toward the “trans community” and lectured people not to “hate” them.
“I have heard about a whole lot of hate that’s being directed at our trans community,” Frey said. “Anybody who is using this as an opportunity to villainize our trans community or any other community out there has lost their sense of common humanity. We should not be operating out of a place of hate for anyone. We should be operating from a place of love for our kids. Kids died today. This needs to be about them. This needs to be wrapping our arms around these families with every bit of love that we can possibly show. And I know that our Minneapolis family and well beyond is prepared to do exactly that.”
WATCH:
Westman opened fire through the window of the Annunciation Catholic Church on Wednesday during a Mass service, which killed an eight and ten-year-old and injured 17 others, Minneapolis Police chief Brian O’Hara confirmed. Westman then died of a self-inflicted gun wound at the back of the church.
Court records show that the alleged gunman’s mother, who worked at the church, applied to change her son’s name from Robert Paul to Robin M. while he was still a minor, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. The application stated that Westman “identifies as a female and wants her name to reflect that identification.”
Videos uploaded to a YouTube account bearing Westman’s name showed disturbing footage of multiple guns, cartridges and ammunition with cryptic statements written on them. The written statements included, “where is your God?” and “6 million wasn’t enough,” an apparent reference to the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. A statement in one of his videos also called to kill President Donald Trump.
During another press conference on Wednesday, Frey told Christians not to offer their “thoughts and prayers” to the victims of the tragedy, stating that the children were already praying when the shooting occurred. Other Democrats, including former White House press secretary Jen Psaki and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, also condemned people for offering their prayers.
All of the remaining victims hospitalized are “expected to survive,” O’Hara confirmed during the latest press conference.
