Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson spent five minutes on Friday accusing President Donald Trump of making his city “less safe” after a judge was arrested on charges of obstructing agents of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
FBI agents arrested Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan Friday on obstruction charges after she allegedly misdirected ICE agents seeking to arrest an illegal immigrant who had a hearing before her on April 18 before escorting the illegal immigrant out through a back door. Johnson claimed the arrest would contribute to “driving people away” from making court appearances.
“When something like this happens, an indictment of a potential defendant is ordered. There will be a court appearance. That didn’t happen in this case, I think what happened here was just show-boating,” Johnson claimed during a press conference. “They’re trying to have this show of force. In the process of doing this, in a courthouse where people need to go for court proceedings, they’re scaring people away from participating in the process. So if they are a witness to a crime or something of the sort, they’re not going to so and participate and that makes our community less safe.”

“If a judge is being arrested in a courthouse, just imagine the chilling effect that it sends to other folks that would otherwise participate in judicial proceedings in our courthouse and not just in the Milwaukee County courthouse, but courthouses across the state of Wisconsin and courthouses across the United States,” Johnson added later. “This makes our community less safe. Less safe. And that’s not a good thing for public safety in Milwaukee or anywhere across our country.”
Dugan’s arrest came a day after New Mexico Judge Jose “Joel” Cano and his wife were arrested by ICE after a member of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua was taken into custody while residing on their property.
“Their actions are causing public safety to be harmed in Milwaukee,” Johnson claimed. “If his administration wants to talk about public safety, that’s great. Let’s have that conversation, but these actions right now run completely counter clock-wise to what he’s trying to do, what he thinks he is trying to do, which is make a safer America. This isn’t going to make our community safer. This is gonna encourage people not to participate in the judicial process, which makes our city and communities across this country less safe.”
During the Biden administration, the Border Patrol encountered millions of illegal immigrants on the U.S.-Mexico border, according to figures released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Upon taking office on Jan. 20, Trump issued several executive orders to address border security, including one designating Mexican drug cartels, TdA and the El Salvadoran prison gang MS-13 as foreign terrorist organizations and invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to speed up the deportation of members of TdA and MS-13 on March 15.
