A California-based federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Thursday to reinstate thousands of fired federal workers.

U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup, a Clinton appointee, directed six agencies to immediately offer jobs back to probationary employees who had been terminated in a ruling from the bench, according to several reports.

“It is sad, a sad day when our government would fire some good employee and say it was based on performance when they know good and well that’s a lie,” Alsup said, according to Politico.

Agencies covered by the order include the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Energy, Interior and Treasury. Alsup determined that the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) violated established procedures.

“This is not ‘some wild and crazy judge in San Francisco said some administration cannot engage in a reduction in force,’” Alsup said, according to Government Executive.
