Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears of Virginia mocked Democratic strategist James Carville during a Friday Fox News appearance, noting he wrongly predicted Joe Biden would win reelection.

Sears is likely to face former Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia in the Nov. 4, 2025, general election which will also include electing 100 members to the state’s House of Delegates. After “Fox and Friends” co-host Lawrence Jones played video of Carville calling Sears a “certain” loser, Sears laughed off the former Clinton campaign aide’s prediction.

“James, my man, do you have some lottery numbers for me? Because you seem so certain. Except you were certain before with Biden, and look where that got you,” Sears said, with Jones responding, “It’s true.”

“The Democrats are almost certain to win the Virginia governor’s race — no, not almost, they are certain to win it,” Carville told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday.

Sears then outlined Spanberger’s voting record in her three terms in the United States House of Representatives.”

“So I just say, my opponent, she has voted against building the wall. She has voted for amnesty, for criminal illegals, she has voted against qualified immunity to — so that the morale of our law enforcement will stay up and their personal possessions won’t be subject to being taken from them because they are doing their job keeping us safe,” Sears said. “I mean, she is running on the successes of a Republican administration here in Virginia. And you know you’re winning when your opponent is running on your success.”

“So, people aren’t going to change, you know, teams mid-stream,” Sears continued. “She was never at any of the tables when all the decisions were being made to get rid of regulations that would bring businesses here, cause job creation, get rid of high taxes and put more money into people’s pockets. These are not the ideologies that would have caused the success in Virginia. And she is running on it.”

Sears, who defeated Democrat Hala Ayala in the 2021 lieutenant governor’s race with 50.7% of the vote in the same election that Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin defeated former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe, then reminded Carville of the state of polling.

“So, James, I see what you tried to do there, but it’s not going to work because the polls are showing that we are neck and neck, and usually by this time, Republicans in Virginia are 10 points behind,” Sears said. “Right now, again, we are either neck or neck or I’m slightly ahead or slightly behind, so she is worried and she should be because all the successes are going to be continued by me, we’re going to have more job creation, parents are still going to matter in their education, women will be women and men will be men, and our children will be safe, more money in your wallet. That’s all I have to say, James. I will invite you to my inauguration.”

Spanberger led Sears by 4.8% in the RealClearPolling average of polls from Dec. 15 to Jan. 15.
