Radio host Charlamagne Tha God warned Tuesday that Democrats are likely to face a difficult path to reclaiming control of the government during the 2026 midterm elections.

Republicans regained control of the Senate and kept control of the House in the November election, securing unified control of the federal government for the first two years of President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. Charlamagne, on “The Breakfast Club,” suggested that Democrats’ rhetoric about Trump has undermined their credibility with voters, particularly after they appeared to abandon claims of Trump being a “fascist” following his 2024 victory and traditionally certified the election results.

“I’m all for the peaceful transfer of power, but Democrats keep following these political norms and traditions, and it’s confusing because you can’t call a man a fascist and a dictator, but when he wins, throws all that rhetoric out the window — unless, of course, it was just politics and you never believed it,” Charlamagne said. “I’ve told y’all this already. Yes, I’ve called Trump a fascist, not because of anything Democrats said, but because of the words I’ve heard come out of Trump’s mouth.”

“But it’s almost like Democrats don’t realize how they screw themselves for the future because the midterms are right around the corner. The only thing they can hope for is that Republicans implode and F things up so bad that the American people are just dying for a change,” he continued. “Because there is nothing Democrats can say about Republicans that we should believe after they spent weeks calling Trump a fascist and calling Republicans fascists and telling us it would be the end of democracy, only to put a button on all of that.”

Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden on Nov. 7 both struck optimistic tones about the election results, with neither describing Trump as a threat to democracy or an authoritarian despite making that a key issue in their campaigns against him.

Charlamagne on Nov. 8 responded on “The Breakfast Club” by casting doubt on whether Democrats ever genuinely thought Trump was “a threat to democracy” or “a fascist.”

“Don’t y’all find it strange that now that he’s won, they’re not calling him a threat to democracy? They’re not calling him a fascist. I mean, damn, on Monday, they was just calling him that,” he said at the time. “I would think that, you know, if you really believe that, then somebody’s speech would be about how America effed up and how things are about to be really bad. It just makes you wonder how much of it did they really believe, or how much of it was just politics. That’s all.”
