Luigi Mangione, the suspect accused of murdering UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson, shouted at reporters Tuesday as he appeared for his extradition proceeding in Pennsylvania.
Mangione is wanted in New York for charges including second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree. He told reporters outside of the Blair County Courthouse that something unspecified is “completely out of touch” and is insulting the “intelligence of the American people” as he arrived for his hearing.
“It’s completely out of touch!” Mangione is heard saying. “And an insult to the intelligence of the American people!”
It is unclear what Mangione was referring to at this time.
Police arrested 26-year-old Mangione on Monday at a McDonalds in Altoona, Pennsylvania after a customer gave local officers a tip that the person of interest was located at the restaurant and held a firearm resembling the one used in the murder. Law enforcement sources said the suspect is an Ivy League graduate who held a complete disdain for the healthcare industry due to its treatment of a deceased family member.
Mangione reportedly possessed a manifesto criticizing the alleged malicious motivations and profit margins of the healthcare industry, according to the New York Post. When police asked the suspect to provide identification, he handed over a fake ID that identified him as “Mark Rosario,” who police say does not exist, according to Fox News.
When police determined the ID to be fake, the officers asked Mangione why he had lied, Fox News reported. Mangione replied that he clearly should not have lied before the officers placed him under arrest.
The suspect is being held without bail at The State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon, Fox News reported.
Security footage showed an unidentified person fatally shoot Thompson several times after he exited the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel in Manhattan on Wednesday. The 50-year-old CEO was shot in the chest, rushed to the hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead.
